Fresno State is heavily favored in the New Mexico Bowl on Saturday against a Wyoming team that finished the season at 6-6 (4:30 p.m. ET, ESPN).
Fresno was 8-4 overall this season and features a powerful offense led by running back Ryan Mathews, who led the nation in rushing at 151.3 yards per game. That does not bode well for Wyoming considering the Cowboys allowed more than 170 yards per game on the ground this season.
Fresno State is an 11.5 point favorite at SBG Global and the total for the game is set at 55.
This game could turn into a blowout if Wyoming is not able to slow down Fresno’s rushing attack. What also is a concern for the Cowboys is their inability to move the ball – their offense simply isn’t very good.
Wyoming has not beaten a team with a winning record throughout the college football betting season. In fact, they only scored one touchdown all season against a team that had a winning record.
The reality is, the Cowboys, who have not been in a bowl game in four seasons, are only in the New Mexico Bowl because they played a weak schedule.
On the plus side for Wyoming backers, the Cowboys are 4-1 ATS in their last five vs. the WAC and they are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games as an underdog. The Cowboys are also 14-6 ATS in their last 20 non-conference games.
On the negative side, the Cowboys not only can’t beat winning teams straight up, they can’t cover against them either. Wyoming is 2-10 ATS vs. a team with a winning record over the past three seasons.
Taking Fresno and giving all those points is no bargain though. The Bulldogs are 8-22 ATS in their last 30 games as a favorite. They are also 9-26 ATS in their last 35 games on grass and are 1-6 ATS in their last seven vs. the Mountain West Conference.
Looking at the total we see that the under is 13-6 in the Cowboys’ last 19 non-conference games while the over is 5-1 in the Bulldogs’ last six non-conference games. The over is 6-2 in the Bulldogs’ last eight bowl games.
