The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, two perennial American League powerhouses square off in a huge East division battle, while over in the National League, the Milwaukee Brewers look to extend their NL Central lead with a game vs divisional foe St. Louis Cardinals.
New York Yankees (80-52) @ Boston Red Sox (82–51)
Trailing the Boston Red Sox by 1.5 games in the American League East, but holding a 7.5 game lead in the Wild Card race, the New York Yankees begin a big series against their division rivals starting tonight at Fenway Park in Boston.
Almost assured of a playoff spot, the Yankees would still like to guarantee home field advantage, which they could do by overtaking the BoSox. CC Sabathia (17-7, 2.99 ERA) will take to the mound for the Yankees, knowing he’s struggled against the Red Sox’s this year, as the big southpaw has gone 0-4. Boston meanwhile has won 10 of 12 games vs the Bronx Bombers, a big reason for the slight lead atop the AL East.
But despite these stats, bookmakers have made the Yankees -140 favorites on the game, with Boston going off at +120.
Boston will counter with another lefty of their own, as John Lackey (12-9, 5.98) will face Sabathia for the second time this season. Lackey won that game back on August 6th, allowing just three runs in six innings.
St. Louis Cardinals (70-64) @ Milwaukee Brewers (81-54)
With a 27-5 record over the past five weeks, the Milwaukee Brewers are officially the hottest team in baseball, as they begin a big series by hosting division rivals St. Louis Cardinals at Miller Park tonight. Holding an almost insurmountable 10.5 game lead over the Cards, the Brewers could end what little suspense is left by winning two or even sweeping the series.
Looking to set a franchise record for most wins in any month (21), the Brew Crew will send Shaun Marcum (11-4, 3.38 ERA) to the hill to face Edwin Jackdon (3-2, 3.99 ERA). Oddsmakers have the Brewers as -145 favorites, with the total sitting at 8.5 runs.
The Brewers and Cardinals also play a three-game set in St. Louis from Sept. 5-7, giving Milwaukee the opportunity to effectively wrap up its first division title since 1982.
Milwaukee has been lights out at home, going 50-16, and are 5-1 vs the Cards at Miller Park.
